Richard F. Storm
Richard F. Storm has been a contributing editor to Power Magazine and an instructor of the short course, Large Electric Utility Boiler Combustion and Performance Improvements, which has been presented a couple times each year since 1992. The course has been improved and developed further by the Storm Technologies team.
Mr. Storm has long supported applying the fundamentals in combustion and performance optimization of large coal fueled utility boilers. Many of the typical improvements have been documented in technical presentations and magazine articles.
Richard currently is participating in education of the general public on energy-related matters and has taught several courses for the OLLI programs at USCB at the Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Beaufort campuses.
Mr. Storm was introduced to international business through involvement with the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). Richard worked around the world for ALCOA at plants in Jamaica, Spain, Suriname, Brazil, Texas, Australia, New York, and Guinea. After the ALCOA experiences, other international companies - including Freeport McMoran and Southern Company - provided consulting and contracting experiences in the Philippines, Indonesia, India, and Italy, among others.
After working in some developing countries, Mr. Storm witnessed first-hand the correlation between energy and economic prosperity - especially the importance of energy to achieve a high Human Development Index and to advance economic growth.
Richard retired from active participation at Storm Technologies in 2012. He worked in the power industry for over 50 years. Mr. Storm's expertise for decades was centered in clean coal combustion for electric power generation. Experiences include new plant startups, serving as a results engineer, boiler diagnostic and acceptance testing, operations and maintenance, outage planning, boiler renovations for performance and reliability improvements, design of burner and combustion systems, design of airflow measurement systems, and boiler emission reductions improvements and consulting services to the electric power, primary metals, and other heavy industries. Prior to starting Storm Technologies in 1992, Richard was a results engineer for Babcock and Wilcox, field service engineer for Riley Stoker, principal engineer at Carolina Power and Light, and head of the Technical Services Department for Flame Refractories.
