Murray Sabrin
Dr. Murray Sabrin is Professor Emeritus of Finance at Ramapo College of New Jersey, where he served on the faculty of the Anisfield School of Business for 35 years (1985–2020) and co-founded, with his wife, Florence, the Sabrin Center for Free Enterprise. He is a Substack author, public speaker, and frequent guest on radio, cable television, and podcasts, known for his principled and intellectual advocacy of free markets, limited government, and civil liberties.
Arriving in America on August 6, 1949, with his older brother and parents—the only survivors of their respective families of the Holocaust—Dr. Sabrin’s life has been shaped by a deep appreciation for freedom, opportunity, and the moral importance of independence. Before entering academia, he worked as a New York City schoolteacher, staff economist, and investment analyst, bringing both practical and scholarly perspectives to his work.
Dr. Sabrin holds a B.A. in history, geography, and social studies education from Hunter College, an M.A. in social studies education from Lehman College, and a Ph.D. in economic geography from Rutgers University. Sabrin is one of only two individuals honored to have the late Austrian School economist, historian, and philosopher Murray N. Rothbard serve as a member of his dissertation committee.
Dr. Sabrin is the founder of Make Americans Financially Independent (MAFI)—a national movement dedicated to restoring financial independence, personal responsibility, and economic freedom in the United States.
As one of the nation’s leading advocates for replacing the welfare state with nonprofit and civil-society solutions, Dr. Sabrin’s mission is to challenge a culture of dependency and promote a society built on dignity, self-reliance, and voluntary cooperation. Through MAFI (mafiusa.com), he leads a growing national community committed to the belief that a free society depends on financially independent citizens.
Dr. Sabrin is considered a “public intellectual” for writing essays about the economy for The Record, the Star-Ledger, the Trenton Times, and the Asbury Park Press. His essays have also appeared in Commerce Magazine, the Mid-Atlantic Journal of Business, and Privatization Review, among other scholarly and popular publications.
In his book Universal Medical Care: From Conception to End-of-Life: The Case for a Single Payer System, Sabrin’s vision for medical care is one in which the individual or family is the single payer, restoring the doctor–patient relationship. Sabrin is also the author of Tax Free 2000: The Rebirth of American Liberty, a blueprint for creating a tax-free America in the 21st century, and Why the Federal Reserve Sucks: It Causes Inflation, Recessions, Bubbles, and Enriches the One Percent, which is available on Amazon.
Sabrin’s other books include Navigating the Boom-Bust Cycle and The Finance of Healthcare, both published by Business Expert Press. His memoir, From Immigrant to Public Intellectual: An American Story, was published in late 2022.
He has been described as the “Thomas Paine of the coming tax revolution,” and Judge Andrew Napolitano wrote, “In Webster’s Unabridged, next to the word ‘courage’ should be a photo of Murray Sabrin.”
In 2024, Sabrin was appointed an Associated Scholar at the Mises Institute, one of the nation’s leading free-market research organizations.
