Mario Kuhar

B.S. Ocean Engineering

Mario Kuhar is a retired environmental, health, and safety (EHS) professional with more than 40 years of experience spanning government, private industry, and large-scale technology operations. He earned a Graduate Certificate in Hazardous Waste Control from Wayne State University, a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering, and an Associate of Science in Oceanographic Technology from the Florida Institute of Technology. He is a Registered Environmental Manager and holds numerous specialized certifications in hazardous waste management, ISO standards, industrial safety training, electrical safety, wastewater treatment, and related fields.

From 1982 to 1989, Kuhar served with the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., where he worked as a mechanical/ocean engineer and naval architect. His responsibilities included submarine structural integrity, including the SSN-21 Seawolf class; deep submergence vehicles (DSV-4 and Sea Cliff); diving life-support systems; air purity systems; and related technical management, training, and logistics programs. He also completed the Navy's Basic Submarine Technology and Basic Diving Officer training.

Kuhar subsequently held environmental engineering positions with Froehling & Robertson, Inc., focusing on geohydrologic data, storage-tank management, NPDES and SPCC permitting, pollution monitoring, and site assessments. From 1992 to 2009, he served as Environmental & Safety Engineering Manager at Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc., where he directed multi-site EHS compliance across operations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Asia. His responsibilities included compliance with OSHA, RCRA, CERCLA, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and other regulations. He also oversaw environmental permitting and reporting, waste and wastewater management, emergency response, worker safety training, remediation, management systems, and EHS auditing. Additionally, he supported product-liability discovery and engineering test-lab operations.

From June 2009 through May 2026, Kuhar held increasingly senior positions at Google Inc. in Mountain View, California, ultimately serving as Data Center Global Environmental and Regulatory Compliance Manager for data center operations and construction. He led a team that successfully developed and transformed Google's global data center EHS program from an informal support function into a structured program built around management systems, including ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and ISO 50001. He oversaw policy development, training, environmental permitting, construction compliance, audits, and regulatory compliance across data centers, mini-clusters, colocation facilities, and points of presence worldwide. His work also focused on aligning these programs with Google's safety, environmental, energy, and electrical objectives.

Kuhar retired in 2026 after a distinguished career focused on practical, proactive environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and the development of comprehensive EHS management systems across government, manufacturing, and technology sectors.
