Effects of Climate Change on Plant Growth in Alberta, Canada

In a study designed to better understand the impacts of potential future climate changes on vegetation productivity in Alberta, Canada, Jiang et al. (2016) employed what they called the smoothed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (sNDVI) to achieve their goal. And what did they learn by so doing? The six researchers report that (1) the monthly sNDVI increased significantly over the past 30 years (1982-2011), that (2) vegetative productivity in northern Alberta was mainly temperature driven, while (3) the vegetative productivity of southern Alberta was predominantly precipitation driven.
